National Museum of Norway

The landscape of Art Museums has undergone a significant transformation, evolving beyond mere display and conservation to become vital public spaces where artistic content is communicated, experienced, and consumed. In our design approach, we deliberately avoided conventional architectural aesthetics, prioritising the functional, emotional, and urban aspects of the brief. The central idea revolves around extending the existing urban context of the museum plaza into the future building. A prominent diagonal space, defined by a tall transparent facade, cuts through the site, inviting public engagement through a grand staircase leading to the exhibition halls. This design not only magnifies the museum's presence but also seamlessly integrates new public life and a unique cultural experience into the intricacies of its urban surroundings.
